But if you stay in the right place, you walk instead of commuting, and that makes all the difference. This itinerary starts from the front door of the residence on via Toledo and doesn’t involve a single taxi.

Day one: the historic center

Start early, when the shutters go up and via Toledo still belongs to the Neapolitans. In ten minutes on foot you reach Spaccanapoli, the straight line that cuts through the UNESCO historic center from end to end. It’s the densest stretch of the city: a church every fifty meters, nativity-figure workshops, courtyards that open up out of nowhere.

The must-see stop is the Cappella Sansevero, for the Veiled Christ. Tickets sell out days in advance in high season, so book before you travel, not on the day. Just beyond is San Gregorio Armeno with its nativity workshops, open all year round and not only in December.

Lunch is eaten on the go, standing up, with a folded pizza a portafoglio or a frittatina. The afternoon is for the National Archaeological Museum, a twenty-minute walk away: the Pompeii mosaics and the Farnese collection are worth the trip on their own.

In the evening, head down to Piazza del Plebiscito and have dinner nearby, walking back to the residence in a quarter of an hour.

Day two: the sea and the hill

In the morning, take the Funicolare Centrale, a few minutes from the front door, up to the Vomero. Castel Sant’Elmo and the Certosa di San Martino offer the view that ends up on every postcard: the bay, Vesuvius, the city spread out below. Go early, before the haze rises.

Walk down the old stepped lanes, cross Chiaia and reach the Lungomare Caracciolo. The pedestrian stretch from Mergellina to Castel dell’Ovo takes an unhurried hour, with the sea on your left and Vesuvius ahead.

In the afternoon, if you still have energy, it’s worth heading back up toward the Teatro San Carlo and the Galleria Umberto I, both a few minutes from the residence. Closing the loop here means returning to where you started, having crossed three different Naples.

Three things to know beforehand

Shoes matter more than anything. Naples is all slopes, basalt paving stones and staircases: two days like this mean around fifteen kilometers (nine miles) on foot.

Metro Line 1 is a real alternative. Toledo station is three minutes from the front door and is considered one of the most beautiful in Europe: just going down to see the blue mosaic is worth the ticket.

You don’t book lunch, you do book dinner. At the good places, in the evening, you won’t get in without a reservation.

Why staying here changes the itinerary

Everything you’ve just read starts from via Toledo and comes back to it. That’s no coincidence: it’s the reason this eighteenth-century palazzo became home to Dimora Cavalcanti. From here the historic center, the seafront, the museums and the funicular are all within reach without ever taking transport, and at the end of the day you walk back instead of hunting for a taxi.

The six rooms of the residence are named after the neighborhoods this itinerary crosses. Those staying in Sanità or Chiaia look directly onto via Toledo.

Two days are enough if you stay in the right place.
