Stendhal called it “the most populous and cheerful street in the universe”, and two centuries later the description still holds.

A little history, to understand it

It was laid out in 1536 by the Spanish viceroy Don Pedro de Toledo, as the axis linking the port with the new districts. Ever since, it has been the street of promenades, theaters and grand cafés: walking it means crossing five centuries of city life.

What to see along the street

Toledo station on metro Line 1, considered one of the most beautiful in Europe: Bob Wilson’s blue mosaic is worth the trip underground even if you don’t take the train. The Gallerie d’Italia, in Palazzo Piacentini, home to Caravaggio’s Martyrdom of Saint Ursula. Galleria Umberto I, a few steps from the end of the street, with its iron and glass dome. And the Quartieri Spagnoli, opening up on the west side: a vertical maze where Naples is at its best.

Where to stop

There is one rule: follow the Neapolitans. Sfogliatella is eaten warm, coffee is drunk standing at the bar, and the sunset is watched from Piazza Trieste e Trento, when the street lights up. If you’re looking for calm, the churches along the way, from Santa Brigida to Spirito Santo, are unexpected oases.

The privilege of staying here

Living via Toledo as a guest is different from crossing it as a tourist: early in the morning, when the shutters go up, or late at night, when it belongs to the Neapolitans, the street shows a face that day visitors never see. The rooms of Dimora Cavalcanti look out onto this very stage: from Sanità and Chiaia the view is of the street itself.

A mile of history, cafés and Neapolitan life: what to see, where to stop and why via Toledo is the perfect starting point for experiencing the city.

[10

post-513","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-things-to-do-in-naples
["GET
